Buy top African players to beef up Kotoko – Sarpong

Experienced Ghanaian coach, Joseph Emmanuel Sarpong, is urging Kumasi Asante Kotoko to focus on signing top players across the African continent to reach higher heights in subsequent CAF Inter-Club competitions.

The Porcupine Warriors bid farewell to the 2018/2019 CAF Confederations Cup last weekend after finishing 3rd in Group C behind Sudanese giants Al Hilal Omdurman and Nkana FC from Zambia.

Coach Sarpong believes the Kumasi giants can only match their continental rivals if they have more top players from other African countries.

“I will appeal to Dr Kyei, he should venture into African clubs like Al-Hilal, Zesco, Nkana, Simba, Al Ahly, Zamalek and buy top players to beef up Kotoko. Kotoko can then make it in Africa. But when you rely on our league, then Kotoko will always be raw. Dr [Kyei] should venture into Africa and get top players about six or five to beef up Kotoko,” he stated,

Meanwhile, Kotoko’s top hierarchy are expected to hold a crucial meeting in the coming days to decide the future of Head Coach Charles Akonnor.

The long-term future of the ex-Ghana international has come under scrutiny following the loss to Zambian side Zesco last Sunday in the CAF Confederation CuP.

J.E. Sarpong also wants Kotoko’s Board to keep the current team unbroken.

“Nobody should call for the head of the coach, they should rather encourage the players and put them together. Keep the coach, keep the team intact, keep the management to move forward”.
