SAFETY IS NOT AUTOMATIC, ACT NOW-CHRISTMAS MESSAGE FROM CETSED

Centre for Transport Security Dialogue (CETSED) is a Non-Governmental Organization, with the primary aim of advocating for a safer, secured and transparent transport systems using credible research.

The countdown to the biggest religious festival has begun. As we are all aware, Christmas is that season where relatives, friends, school mates, employees and employers travel long distances to attend weddings, festivals, family re-unions, Government through State Agencies and Corporate entities take the opportunity to soberly reflect on activities during the year and make resolutions for the year ahead. For all these activities to be successful, the element of transportation, whether by rail, road, water or air is essential. CETSED is calling on all Ghanaians to SPEAK UP, and use appropriate means to get complaints addressed swiftly to ensure an ACCIDENT FREE CHRISTMAS.

As  passengers or pedestrians never KEEP SILENT when you suspect that something is amiss. Your SILENCE and INACTION can result in the death of a relative, colleague or loved ones. CETSED understands through research that, the usual focus on roads as the preferred means of transportation by most Ghanaians ought to be reviewed. This review will help the general public to be exposed to the broad concept of transportation which involves not just the

Road Transport (Trucks, Taxi, Trotro, Okada, Tricycle) but:

Rail Transport (Trains),

Air Transport (Aviation) and

Water (Marine) Transportation (Canoes, Pontoons, Cruisers, Boats, Jet Skis). Unfortunately the focus and concentration have always been on ROADS  of which CETSED sees beyond.

Issues concerning safety should be taken more seriously to ensure the actualization of reduction in accidents and set safety targets. By this message, we are urging the appropriate authorities to protect human, flora and fauna lives as well as properties.

The closure of the Buipe-Yapei bridge in the Northern part of Ghana and the negative effects it is having on productivity ought to be resolved as soon as possible. CETSED is appealing to all statutory agencies tasked with oversight responsibilities to do all they can to ensure that transportation of people and goods to and from the north goes on smoothly during the Yuletide.

The November 25, 2017 Starbow accident is a signal that we have to take issues of transportation safety more seriously as a nation. Investors globally take a lot into account before conducting business especially issues involving safety and security. With 7.9% growth rate per annum and the President's expectation that Ghana's aviation sector will soon be the aviation hub in Africa, greater emphasis should be placed on transportation safety.

The rail sector as studies have shown, can help reduce traffic significantly on our busy and choked streets, however years of neglect and inadequate attention to its infrastructure is affecting lives and productivity negatively. CETSED is of the firm belief and conviction that management of Ghana Railways Development Authority will adopt international safety standards to prevent incidents such as train derailment as happened on October 2017 and coaches dis-entangling as happened on February 2015, both at Tesano, Accra.

CETSED places a premium on the activities of the Ghana Maritime Authority, which oversees safety and security on all water bodies. The rental and use of Jet Skis especially for leisure at hospitality facilities sited near water bodies should be standardized and properly regulated to ensure international safety measures and accident free festive season.

A well improved transportation sector can motivate more people to invest and patronize the tourism industry. The Christmas season is expected to boost tourism in different parts of the country, which is the more reason why CETSED is calling on all stakeholders to be particularly mindful of identified risks and issues involving safety.

We are by this appealing to all law enforcements, licensing and regulatory agencies like the Parliamentary Select Committee on Transport, Tourism Ministry, Ghana Maritime Authority, Ghana Ports and Harbour Authority (GPHA), Railway Ministry, Aviation Ministry, Transport Ministry, Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) , Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) etc. to put in place appropriate mechanisms and strategies to ensure ACCIDENT FREE CHRISTMAS.

Safety is not automatic, act now.

Wishing all Ghanaians a MERRY CHRISTMAS
