Pupils of Omanjor MA Basic School study on stones, bare floor

Over 2,000 pupils of the Omanjor MA Basic Cluster of Schools, in the Ga West Municipality of the Greater Accra Region are forced to sit and write on stones due to inadequate furniture in the school.

A visit to the school by a reporter from vision 1 News on Wednesday 14th March 2018 showed pupils using stones as desks with others sitting on the bare floor, in equally crowded classrooms. Other children were also seen sitting on makeshift wooden planks supported by cement blocks whiles caterers under the school feeding programme sits and the pupils queued on the hot sun to be served with food.

The visit follows a tipoff by a worried parent who was concerned about the bizarre conditions her wards study under on daily basis.

The vision 1 News also observed that there were cracks in the marker boards used for teaching in some of the classrooms making it difficult for teachers to illustrate and write down notes effectively. This defeats Ghana’s quest to meet Goal 4 of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which calls for inclusive and equitable quality education, especially at the basic level.

The public school is serving residents of Sowutuom, Olebu, Lomnava, Omanjor, Amomole, Capital Hills and its environs.
The headmaster of one of the schools Mr. Agudey Abbey prevented Vision1 news reporter Akora Kofi Darko from reporting on the bad state due to the fear of victimization.

Vision 1 news was however observed that pupils who are lucky to get a desk to sit on a daily basis are forced to share with two students; thereby making the affected students uncomfortable in class.

A parent who interacted with the Akora Kofi Darko on condition of anonymity appealed to government to provide the school with teaching and learning materials to make the school attractive to the children.

She threatened to withdraw his three children from the school if the challenges are not address before the end of the term.
“I won’t hesitate to withdraw my wards from this school if government doesn’t get the needed infrastructure for the school. It is shameful, our kids can’t be learning under this bad condition,” she said.

Efforts by Vision 1 News Akora Kofi Darko to get a reaction from the Ga West Municipal Education Directorate or the Municipal Chief Executive Officer Mr. Clement Nii Lamptey Wilkinson have proved futile as at the time of going to press. This site would update readers when reaction is available.
