GJA to drag Hajia Fati to court over assault of Multimedia journalist

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has condemned the attack on a journalist of the Multimedia Group, Ohemaa Sakyiwaa Ahwenepa, by popular New Patriotic Party (NPP) apologist, Hajia Fati at the NPP’s headquarters in Accra on Friday.

Hajia Fati is alleged to have slapped Sekyiwaa on her face when she tried interviewing her (Hajia Fati) about issues regarding the NPP’s National Delegates Conference.

The assault, according to Sakyiwaa, happened after Hajia Fati forcefully denied Sammy Crabbe, a suspended Second Vice Chairman of the NPP, from picking up forms to contest for the party’s chairmanship position.

Narrating the incidence further, Sakyiwaa said she was attempting to take photos of Hajia Fati when she slapped her on the face and her mouth and “almost took my phone from me”.

Reacting to the incidence in an interview on Joy News, President of GJA, Affail Monney, described the attack on the journalist as “unfortunate”, adding that such maltreatments of a journalist shouldn’t be occurring in the 21st century and, especially immediately after the celebration of World Press Freedom Day.

“It’s unfortunate to hear that a journalist will be attacked in the line of duty; when they seek to get the news to the public. GJA condemns the act and will act on it appropriately”, he said.

He disclosed that the GJA is considering legal action against the ‘fiery’ NPP fanatic as a legal team has been put together to address the issue.

“Enough is enough. These people attacking journalists need to be brought to book to serve as a deterrent to others. We need to go to court over this issue”, he said.

Mr. Affail Monney, therefore, urged the Ghanaian media and journalists to stand up against acts of violence against their colleagues.

The Association will, on Monday, hold a press conference on the matter.
