Government pays Chinese firm $98M to mark BECE papers

Ghana’s Minister for Education, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh says its outfit has paid a Chinese firm Huaseng Maiteng $98 million to mark the papers of he just ended Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

The Minister said the company was among 36 others, including 35 from Ghana who expressed interest in this job.

“After several consultations, we chose the Chinese company Huaseng Maiteng to mark all the BECE papers and this is bit cheaper as they are only taking $98 million compared to WAEC who would have done for free” – Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh said.

The Vice President of Ghana, Mahamudu Bawumia at a different Press Conference at the Jubilee House said “the decision to allow a Chinese firm to mark the BECE papers is in its right direction”.

According to the Vice President, the money involved is huge due to the fact that the company has to translate the questions and answers to Chinese, mark them and re-translate into English.

“Don’t be worried about the cost involved. We are still protecting the public purse. We paid them this money because they have to translate all the questions and answers into Chinese, mark them and then translate them back to English.” – Bawumia added.

The examination which 24,000 pregnant teens took part ended on June 9 and the Chinese firm is expected to release results by August.
