Italian Footballer Suspended For Blasphemy After Insulting Virgin Mary During A Game

How crazy is it that in this day and age people can still get punished for blasphemy?

Blasphemy, as defined by someone very wise whose name I can’t remember right now, is a law established by the religious to protect the feelings of their supposedly omnipotent God.

Imagine being omnipotent yet getting b*tthurt that someone said some bad words about you, your kid (Jesus) or your mistress (Mary)?

Italy, which is the seat of the Roman Catholic Church and remains one of the most religious nations in the West, still have blasphemy codes which take effect in some instances.

That’s what Udinese midfielder Rolando Mandragora found out to his dismay after he angrily swore against the virgin Mary during a Serie A game.

Mandragora said “”Porca Madonna, Vaffanculo, Dio Cane” – which roughly translates as Goddamnit Mary, f*** off — after his shot was saved by the opposing goalkeeper.

After the game the Lega Serie A – the body which runs Italian football – said Mandragora had flouted the blasphemy laws and suspended him for one game.

Udinese won the game against Sampdoria 1-0, but would now lose the hugely influential Mandragora, who they signed from Juventus, for their next Serie A outing.
